Manually Optimize PNG Images Painlessly
Jordan Dobson Aug. 19

PNGCrusher is a PNG optimizing application I discovered today while looking for a way to shrink the file size of the portfolio images we're creating for our new Squad site. This application is Mac OS X only… Sorry PC!
We don't use PNG files much mainly because of their file size is typically very large when compared to JPG & GIF files. It looks like PNGCrusher might help us meet our goal of grouping all images for a portfolio piece, into a single file, with transparent space between each image, while keeping the file size of low. Phew… Awesome!
I tried it on the portfolio piece below for Further Seems Forever and PNGCrusher saved me half a megabyte! All you need to do do is drag and drop your images on the application icon and it handles the rest. If it can't improve the file size of your image it leaves it alone. Brilliant!

Download it and try it out yourself. I'll be looking into some additional PNG optimization options… since 1.7 MegaBytes is still a little large for my liking. I'll post my findings in a future post.
